Here’s something I picked up on my latest stroll through Nordstrom’s cosmetics department. Part of Bobbi Brown’s Spring “Platinum Pink” collection, this shimmer brick provides a really great flush of color to pale post-winter complexions. Just swirl your brush through all of the 5 color stripes and apply anywhere you would normally put bronzer (think where the sun hits: cheekbones, top of nose, temples, dab on the forehead). Add a pop of bright blush to the apples of cheeks to finish the look (the make up artist used Bobbi’s “Pink Sugar” blush, which I happened to already have at home.)

This worked wonders with my very fair complexion, but I imagine it would be great on deeper skin tones as well. I have to apply bronzer with a VERY light touch ordinarily - so this was a great way to punch up my skin without risking “looking like an asshole” as my boyfriend so fondly describes the people who are sunkissed and tan in the middle of Portland’s famously rainy winters and springs.

Added bonus: use your brush in all or some of the color stripes to customize the look. You can even take a shadow brush and use individual color stripes for your eyes!

Lip gloss of the week: Stila Lip Glaze in “Raspberry” - a perfect punchy pink that gets your lips ready for spring. It’s long wearing, lightly scented & not for those who shy away from tacky (the texture, not the low brow adjective) glosses. Definitely perfect for the bright colors to come with this spring’s trends. And, as the girl who sold it to me pointed out “it’s like a jolly rancher for your lips!” Now, who wouldn’t like that?

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish/Natural - review!

The pro’s:
- definitely provides a nice, light coverage perfect for those who hate pancakey foundation
- feels really smooth once on skin
- doesn’t make face look dry like some powder foundations
- the medium really was the right color match for this FAIR FAIR girl…which could be the cosmetics company’s version of vanity sizing…but either way, it was a good color match, didn’t make me pasty, added a little bit of color in a way that was easy to blend for a line-free jaw

The con’s:
- I am a wee bit shiny by most of the way through the day, so a re-application would probably be ideal…call me lazy, but that never actually happens
- seems to collect a bit on my spot-concealer (which is blended well prior to adding the mineralize powder)

In summary: I actually like this. I’ve steered clear of MAC’s foundation/powder/concealer products for quite some time now, as I felt they did a number on my skin. I don’t think this has added any blemishes (I already get the occasional break out), and I certainly don’t think it has increased/decreased oil or moisture in my skin. It is, I believe, technically considered “powder” by the MAC peeps, but it was suggested to me for low coverage & I think it was a spot on suggestion. I’d recommend it to others.

A peek into my purse…

I love posts that people do about the contents of their…fill in the blank. Purse, desk drawer, bathroom countertop, make up bag, etc. I find it fascinating! So here’s my verson. What’s in my…handbag!

I have a Hobo Bag that I carry with me most of the time.

purse photo

I bought it at Nordstrom Rack last July, for something like $80. I have no idea what the name of it is, because I can’t find it online anywhere (honestly, I didn’t try super hard). I’m assuming it’s an older make because it was at the Rack, but it work just super for me. It’s large enough to fit plenty of stuff, and small enough to not be ridiculous. I probably won’t even consider replacing it for at least a couple of years.

And, drumroll please…here’s what I cram into said bag:

purse contents photo

If you clink through to this photo on flickr, you’ll be able to see more precise details of the contents.

Basically, we have (clockwise starting at top left):
-the Paul Frank case for my iPhone (phone was being used to take the pic)
-Kate Spake Pasadena Neda wallet (fancy Christmas gift, woo woo!)
-Blink eye drops (awe-some for contact lens wearers)
-fabulous work pager (‘nuff said)
-work id
-migraine medicine (Maxalt, it’s my wonder drug)
-my favorite drug pen, I guard that pen with my life
-Starbucks card (from my Christmas stocking)
-“safety whistle” (thanks, Mom)
-two lipsticks & 6 lip glosses (yes, entirely necessary - these are my faves, I can’t carry around fewer - I tried and these all end up back in there again within a week)
-coach key ring with work & house keys (car keys on a different ring since I don’t drive much during the week)
-goodie ouchless hair tie
-Vmoda Vibe ear buds (awesome, mid-price range as far as good earphones go, well worth the $$$)

And there you have it. That’s what I carry around on a daily basis.

So, BF got stuck workung late and asked me to run an errand for him - pick up his newly altered suit from the downtown Nordstrom. Which is how I found myself alone & meandering the cosmetics section tonight.

My most frequent & unsolved makeup complaints have to do with foundation. It’s too thick & makes me break out, or it’s too sheer & I want more coverage, or the brand doesn’t make a shade light enough for me, etc.

All this as an intro to saying - I came home tonight with a MAC pressed mineral foundation. (BTW, in medium - I was so surprised, I made her double check!) Stay tuned, if I like it’ll let you know.

Patterned tights FAIL.

While today has, as a whole, been perfectly pleasant, I have spent the better part of my day fighting with my black patterned tights.

They start out perfectly positioned, but throughout a single appointment, they ended up with the top of the waistband down below my hips. Which means the crotch of the tights was somewhere close to my knees. I looked like Burt impersonating the penguins on Mary Poppins. (Oh, how I wish I were kidding.)

At one point, while hiking them up, I sent my fingernails through the waist. If it weren’t approximately freezing outside right now, they would be in the garbage already…

My affection for cosmetics runs deep…and here’s my newest acquisition. This is “Greek Holiday” from NARS. It has a great texture, never tacky feeling, this lip gloss is a neutral & is perfectly everyday appropriate. I have an idea it would be great layered on top of a rockin’ lipstick or liner, as it would add some depth - but I haven’t tried it yet. It has a subtle shimmer, nothing over the top.
